5 of Netflix’s Best True Crime Documentaries

Any true crime addict knows that some of the best resources for real true crime events are through podcast, insert shout out to My Favorite Murder, Crime Junkie and Generation Why. There are lot’s of additional resources available on various streaming networks. These are 5 true crime docs worth checking out on Netflix.

  1. Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer

This is one of the latest docs to arrive on the Netflix platform. It is done extremely well, visually and through detailed accounts. It is truly captivating. It follows the police investigation of Richard Ramirez, a serial killer that terrorized citizens of Los Angeles and San Fransisco. We are presented with first hand interviews from the detectives themselves, Frank Salerno and Gil Carillo. Richard Ramirez was responsible for a string of murders, sexual assaults and burglaries, presented with archived footage and first hand interviews.

2. Abducted in Plain Sight

This is a disturbingly dark documentary. It follows Jan Broberg who was kidnapped twice by a family friend / neighbor, Robert Berchtold in the 70’s at the age of 12. Get ready to hold onto to your seats. This story has an entire family under manipulation and brainwashing, all at the hands of a sociopathic man. It’s a crazy one to follow and gives great detail into how certain choices, can take a family down a dark path.

3. Making a Murderer, parts 1 & 2

This is single handily the doc that created it all. Making a Murderer takes you on the story of DNA exoneree, Steven Avery. This is probably the biggest true crime doc to date. Steven Avery, is in the midst of exposing corruption in local law enforcement, then finds himself as a prime suspect in the disappearance and murder of Teresa Halbach. This series takes you through a 10 year period. Nothing in this story is what it appears to be, follow the twists and turns of this highly talked about case.

4. Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez

All American football story. This series dives into the story of American NFL footballer player, Aaron Hernandez’s murderous fall and shocking death. Aaron was arrested on suspicion of murdering his fiancee’s sister’s boyfriend, Odin Lloyd. Aaron was sentenced to life in prison for the murder in 2015, while on trial for Lloyds murder, Aaron was also indicted for a double homicide from 2012. The documentary takes a deeper dive into Aaron’s repeated head injuries and a look into his childhood upbringing, which might have led to his destructive behavior.

5. The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez

Trigger warning here, this story is a graphic one to follow and unbelievably sad. This series takes you on the journey through the Gabriel Fernandez trials and gives an eye opening look into the investigation. Gabriel Fernandez, just 8 years old died as a result of prolonged abuse, at the hands of his mother and her boyfriend. Because of the graphic nature of Gabriel’s death, the series takes you on a journey of finding accountably and the government systems that failed to protect Gabriel.
